What is an overpayment?
An overpayment is a benefit payment that needs to be paid back either partially or in full, because the wrong amount was paid to you. There are several ways we can claim the back the payment:
- we can recover the overpaid amount from your ongoing housing benefit entitlement or from another benefits such as Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance.
- If you are no longer entitled to housing benefit and you do not receive any other benefits we will send you an invoice.
What happens once we identify an overpayment?
You will be sent an entitlement letter showing how the change has affected your housing benefit entitlement.
Excess council tax support
If you have been overpaid council tax support you will have to pay back the amount that you were not entitled to. We will deduct the amount of council tax support you have been overpaid from your council tax account and send you a recalculated bill. The bill will show how much you will need to pay and when the payment is due.
