Don’t let your electricals go to waste

electrical, recycling

It’s time to dust off those small electricals that you’ve been meaning to get rid of – and bring them to your local library.

We’ve teamed up with Material Focus to provide a new electrical recycling service across all council libraries.

•    You can now recycle small electricals at all Harrow libraries
•    Harrow gets £30k funding from Material Focus to launch new scheme
•    Drop off items like toasters and hairdryers in pink bins installed

You’ll notice pink recycling bins in the libraries along with the Hypnocat poster. Here you’ll be able to drop off items smaller than a four-slice toaster:

  • Small appliances such as blenders, irons, kettles and toasters.
  • Small household electricals such as alarm clocks, CD players, electric toothbrushes, hairdryers, games consoles, radios and small speakers.
  • Personal technology such as cameras and headphones.
  • Cables and Plugs
  • There will be a separate bin for laptop donations so they can be given a new lease of life

Cllr Stephen Greek, Cabinet Member for Performance, Communications and Culture said:

" Here in Harrow we’re delighted to introduce these brand new pink electrical recycling bins at our libraries. This makes it easier for residents to recycle their electricals which not only helps the environment but also saves taxpayer money. This will also help in our wider plans to increase our recycling rate to 35%.”

Harrow was awarded £30,000 by Material Focus to launch this scheme across all council owned libraries. It means recycling electricals is now closer to home without the need to book a slot at the recycling centre. The pink bins will be emptied once a week and taken to the recycling centre to be collected with all other electrical waste.

Scott Butler, Executive Director of Material Focus said:

"We are pleased to support Harrow Council’s expansion scheme that addresses the pressing issue of e-waste. "By investing in improved collection and drop-off services and exploring new recycling methods, we are taking a significant step towards creating a more sustainable future by making it easier for 10 million more people to recycle their electricals."

This is one of over 60 UK projects funded by Material Focus, the not for profit leading the Recycle Your Electricals campaign. Harrow is joining other projects around the country in making it easier for 10 million UK residents to recycle their electricals.
