Green and glorious! Chandos and Riverside Parks get Green Flag status

Green flag

There are big celebrations for 8 Harrow parks today [15 July]. For the first time in a generation the London Borough of Harrow has won two new green flag awards.

  • Harrow now boasts 8 Green Flag Parks
  • For the first time in a generation Harrow has two new award-winning parks.
  • Hatch End Riverside Park and Chandos Recreation Ground joins 6 Harrow parks offering quality facilities and recreational space

From today Green Flags will be flying in Hatch End’s Riverside Park and Chandos Recreation Ground - along with 6 other parks that have retained their status as award winning.

Riverside Park in Hatch End is a hidden gem northwest of the borough located next to the Arts Centre. It went through an upgrade in 2023 and is now a favourite spot for locals with its playground, woodland area and wildflowers as well as an outdoor stage for performances. Chandos Recreation Ground in Edgware has also gone through some major transformation. Thanks to the Silk Stream Project it boasts a new wetland which further supports reducing the impact of flooding. The park is perfect for walks, children’s playground and natural habitats.

The hard work from volunteers, park user groups and the council’s parks team paid off as   Kenton Recreation Ground, Pinner Memorial Park, Canons Park, Harrow Recreation Ground, Headstone Manor Park and Roxeth Recreation Ground retained Green Flag Status.

Cllr Janet Mote Cabinet Member for Community & Culture said:

“I am absolutely delighted that we’ve not only retained our six award winning parks, but we’ve gained two new ones. It’s come at a perfect time as we mark 60 years of Harrow. I know this will mean a lot to our residents who love using our parks.

“Alongside our £6m investment in parks over three years, I know there has been an incredible amount of work that has taken place to deliver this flagship action. I’d like to thank our staff, park user groups and volunteers who have been key to achieving this. It’s a fantastic example of how listening, co-designing, and working together can make our parks truly special for our residents.”

Getting two new Green Flag parks was one of 30 flagship actions set out in the corporate plan to restore pride in Harrow.

Looking ahead, plans are in place to upgrade West Harrow Recreation Ground for a Green Flag status in 2026. This success is supported by Council’s capital funding, improved maintenance —and strong cross-departmental collaboration. This summer, discover Harrow’s parks during Love Parks week (25 July – 3 August)   whether it’s tennis, getting some steps in or simply just taking in the scenery, find a park that suits you.
