Individual Electoral Registration

Individual Electoral Registration (IER) means that people need to register individually, rather than by household. This rule was introduced in 2014.

What do I need to do?

If you have not previously registered, are a new resident of Harrow or have moved between properties, you need to register to vote.

Eligibility to vote

In England and Wales you can register to vote if you are 17 years old (and in some cases if you are 16). However, you can only vote when you become 18.

You must either be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen, that is:

  • citizens who have leave to remain in the UK or do not require such leave
  • citizens of the Republic of Ireland
  • citizens of a European Union (EU) member state

Please note that your details will need to have been successfully confirmed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) before you are entered onto the electoral register.
