Preparing for an emergency
Make a plan
Being prepared can make emergencies easier to manage. Having a simple household plan ensures everyone knows what to do and where to go.
- Plan your escape routes – think about how you would safely leave your home in a fire, or what you would do if your home began to flood. If you live with others, discuss the plan together.
- Write down key phone numbers – keep a paper copy in an easy to grab place, such as inside your emergency (grab) bag.
- Include contact details for:
- family or friends you might need to stay with
- your GP and details of any regular medication
- home or contents insurance providers and policy numbers
- Use the Government’s household emergency plan template to record everything in one place.
Prepare your home
Taking small steps now can make a big difference during an emergency.
- Complete an online Home Fire Safety Check to help reduce fire risks in your property.
- Test smoke alarms monthly – set a reminder on your phone or calendar.
- Know where your mains controls are – you may need to turn off gas, electricity or water if you need to leave your home due to flooding or another incident.
- Check your insurance – make sure your home or business is covered for the risks in your area, including flooding.
- If you live in a flood risk area, find out what extra measures you can take to protect your property
