Before you register
Attend a pre-registration meeting
Visit PACEY (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years) online and sign up for a pre-registration meeting.
The meeting will:
- Explain the process of becoming a childminder.
- Give you an introduction to the role.
- Help you understand what to expect.
Complete a home-based childcare course
Before you can register with the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted), you must complete a childcare qualification.
You will need to complete the Preparing to Work in Home-Based Childcare course. This is a Level 3 Home-Based Childcare Award (HBCA) qualification designed for childminders.
The course will help you understand how to:
- Set up a home-based childcare service.
- Meet legal requirements.
- Support children's learning and development.
- Run your childcare business safely and effectively.
You can access the course through PACEY Preparing to work in home-based childcare.
