Celebrating Christmas with our Ukrainian community

Saint Nicholas

Festive joy, laughter and community spirit was felt in Harrow’s special Christmas celebrations for Ukrainian refugees.

More than 60 families from the council’s Homes for Ukraine scheme came together to enjoy an evening of celebrations on Friday 12 December at Serenity Restaurant. Organised by the council, families were treated to delicious festive food, drinks, and plenty of holiday fun. It was topped off by a visit from Saint Nicholas, who brought smiles and gifts for the children. Guests also joined in traditional carol singing.

It's a small gesture to help make these families feel at home. These are families who fled the war in Ukraine. Under the Homes for Ukraine scheme Harrow is helping families start new lives.

Cllr Janet Mote, Cabinet Member for Community and Culture said:

“It was wonderful to see so many families come together and celebrate the festive season. This event is about more than just Christmas, it’s about showing solidarity, compassion, and creating a sense of belonging for those who have faced unimaginable challenges. Harrow is proud to stand with our Ukrainian community and ensure they feel supported and welcomed.”

Local councillors, including Cllr Janet Mote, Deputy Mayor Cllr Yogesh Teli, Cllr Krishna Suresh, and Cllr Sasikala Suresh, attended the event to show their support and solidarity with our Ukrainian community.

Guest, Anastasiia, said:

“As a recent arrival and refugee from Ukraine, I am so grateful for the incredible support and warm welcome. I am very happy to be a part of this community. Thank you.”

This celebration was more than just a festive gathering, it was a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the strength of community.

Since launching the Homes for Ukraine scheme in March 2022, more than 400 local people have opened up their homes to welcome over 500 Ukrainian citizens. As a local authority, the Council is helping Ukrainian refugees to find sponsors in Harrow and helping citizens adapt to life in their new home. If you’re thinking about becoming a sponsor, contact the Homes for Ukraine team at community.development@harrow.gov.uk. You can also find a list of common questions about sponsorship.
