We continue to mark Remembrance with the Mayor's Poetry competition.
This year, primary and secondary schools in Harrow took part in the competition for which they were invited to write a poem about remembrance with the themes ‘Thinking about friends’ for years 1 and 2 , and ‘Conflict and Remembrance’ for years 3 to 13. At the Mayor’s Remembrance Sunday service, 4 winners, 4 runners- up and their families were invited to poetry reading at the Pavillion in the Town Centre. The ceremony took place after the Remembrance service where they read their poem to the Mayor, Cllr Anjana Patel, Deputy Lieutenant Simon Ovens and other guests.
Each poem gave a perspective on war and remembrance, from a soldier’s viewpoint to people showing respect and kindness. The poems were moving and inspiring showcasing how important it was to never forget the bravery and courage of those who fought for our freedom.
All winners, runners up and those highly commended were also presented with a special certificate from the Mayor.
Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Anjana Patel said:
“Each year the Mayor runs a Remembrance Poetry Competition, and I would like to thank all the young poets who took part this year. This is a wonderful way to help our younger generation understand the importance of Remembrance. We have some very talented and amazing children in Harrow!”
