First phase of work commences for the introduction of the Rayners Lane red route trial,
- Resurfacing works start Monday 10 November
- First step to make area safer, accessible and less congested
- Red Route trial and public consultation starts Monday 24 November
If you travel through Rayners Lane, you’ll have experienced the struggle – gridlocked roads and double parking that seems to strike at all hours. The good news is things are about to change following the council’s decision to introduce a red route trial.
We’re kicking off the Rayners Lane area improvements on Monday 10 November with overnight resurfacing of key roads – part of the council’s £42million investment in better and long-lasting roads. These works are crucial in getting the network ready for the next step.
On Monday 24 November, a six-month red route trail will launch under an Experimental Traffic Order alongside a public consultation. The goal? To crack down on dangerous and illegal parking, ease traffic flow and, create a smoother experience for everyone – whether you’re driving through the area or visiting local shops.
Cllr Paul Osborn, Leader of the Council said:
“For too long, Rayners Lane has suffered from gridlocked traffic and poor road safety, often caused by double parking. These are issues that local people and businesses have raised many times. We’ve listened and we are now taking action.
“We've taken the decision to implement the red route trial. It’s a bold step towards smoother traffic flow, safer streets, and stronger support for local businesses. This is a six month trial that has the potential to become permanent. We want to hear from everyone, and I encourage feedback on our scheme.”
The red route will include key sections of Alexandra Avenue, Rayners Lane, and Village Way East, with clear new signage and road markings. Double red lines will indicate no stopping at any time, except in designated bays. Monitoring and enforcement will be carried out using CCTV and other approved methods. The scheme will also tackle issues around motorcycles, and parking availability with one-hour free parking still available.
Key timelines and what to expect:
- 10 November to 21 November: Overnight resurfacing works from 8pm-5am. These works are part of the council’s £42m investment for better and long-lasting roads. Parking will be suspended during these hours on:

- Monday 17 – Thursday 20 November: Rayners Lane (between Alexandra Avenue and Village Way East) and Village Way East (between Rayners Lane and Imperial Drive)
