Message of solidarity: Synagogue attack in Manchester

Following the news of the today's attack in Greater Manchester, the leader of the council issues the following statement.

Cllr Paul Osborn, Leader of the Council,

I am deeply alarmed to hear of the appalling attack at Heaton Park Synagogue – and on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and those affected by this dreadful event.

This is a despicable act of violence and terror which I strongly condemn. This is not only upsetting to those of the Jewish faith, but for everyone who values and cherishes the freedom of religion in our society.

I know many residents within our Jewish community will be feeling very anxious. I am in regular contact with the police to ensure ongoing protection and support to help our communities locally to feel safe and secure.

Harrow will always stand proud as a diverse and welcoming borough — home to many faiths, races, and backgrounds. We will not allow hate to break our bond of unity.

We know that at times like these, incidents of threatening behaviour and hate crime can increase. If you experience, or witness a hate crime, please report it to the Police by calling 101 – if you are worried for your safety, or someone else's, please call 999. Community Security Trust (CST) a charity that supports Jewish people can also be contacted - they can be contacted 0800 032 3263
