More than 10,000 people turn out for celebration
The Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Anjana Patel, visited Harrow’s twin town of Douai to take part in the historic Fêtes de Gayant - a vibrant festival featuring towering giant effigies paraded through the streets. The Mayor attended the Civic Lunch alongside Douai’s Mayor, Frédéric Chéreau, and local officials, where the dignitaries exchanged gifts.
The Fêtes de Gayant, a centuries-old celebration dating back to the 16th century, was originally held to honour Saint Maurand for protecting Douai. The festival revives local craftsmanship traditions, with the giant statues of Monsieur and Madame Gayant dancing through the town accompanied by musicians. Every year, the Mayor of Douai invites the Mayor of Harrow to take part, as part of a partnership that has united the towns since 1979. This twinning grew from a post-war drive to forge stronger bonds across Europe.
This year’s visit was especially memorable, as delegates also watched the Tour de France pass through Douai for the first time in 25 years. Despite the rain, crowds waited for hours to glimpse the world’s most famous cycling race. The parade itself was exceptionally well organised, involving display groups from all over the world including Colombia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. A fantastic concert by the Municipal Band followed, where two members have played for over 60 years.
The Mayor, Cllr Anjana Patel, commented: “It is a privilege to represent Harrow and meet the Mayor of our twin town, Douai. As Harrow marks 60 years as a London borough, we are also celebrating over 40 years of friendship with Douai, rooted in kindness, respect, and shared values. I am proud to honour this milestone in Douai and further strengthen our friendship.
"Travel from London to Douai took just a couple of hours, and the hospitality in the town was outstanding. The people of Douai are kind, courteous, extremely proud of their heritage, and welcoming to all. This experience has left a very positive impression of French culture and the warm spirit of Douai’s community. In July 2030 Douai will celebrate the 500th Anniversary of this festival and preparations have already started to make it a special celebration. I hope for many of Harrow’s residents to pencil this lovely celebration into their calendar."
The Mayor also invited Mayor Chéreau and the people of Douai to visit the first traditional Hindu temple in France, currently under construction in Paris.
Bravo to Mayor Frédéric Chéreau and his team of dedicated civil servants, who take immense pride in their civic duties. Merci!
