Every day our waste and recycling crews empty thousands of bins. For two crews recently it was more than just about emptying bins.
Their quick-thinking actions saved a young girl from danger and potentially life-threatening injuries.
What seemed to be a normal routine changed quickly when a food waste crew saw a young girl hanging precariously from the roof of a house. Recognising the immediate risk to her life, they alerted colleagues working on a recycling round. Together they acted quickly and retrieved a mattress from a nearby skip. Within moments of placing the mattress on the ground, the young girl lost her grip and fell.
Thanks to the crew’s actions, she landed safely, avoiding serious harm and was seen by emergency services. The crews then resumed their rounds for the day. She is now receiving the care and support she needs.
Cllr Stephen Greek, Cabinet Member for Performance, Communications and Customer Experience said:
“This could have ended differently but thanks to the quick-thinking actions of our crews, they’ve saved someone’s life. I’m incredibly proud of them for going above the call of duty, putting our residents first, while carrying out an essential service for Harrow households. I’d like to thank them for their courage and bravery.”
