Byron Quarter development to deliver 149 new family homes including brand new council-houses.
Harrow businesses found out about exciting opportunities to join the supply chain for Byron Quarter - the first of two council-owned sites to be regenerated through the partnership between the London Borough of Harrow and Wates Residential
Byron Quarter in Wealdstone will deliver 149 needed genuinely affordable high-quality family homes, including new Council-owned houses. The project was approved in February, and preparations are underway for the works to start later this year.
The Meet the Buyer event on Thursday 24 April, offered local suppliers to chance to meet with members of the Harrow and Wates’ teams to discuss the opportunities the new development offers. Support was also on hand to help local businesses get supplier ready. And it doesn’t stop there – businesses who join the supply chain will receive ongoing support over the lifetime of the development build, which is expected to last two years on Byron Quarter, and up to 10 years for the two Harrow development sites.
The partnership will boost Harrow’s economy by encouraging local businesses to sign up to become part of the supply chain for their regeneration projects. This will help create jobs, and provide education, skills, and training. This includes a pledge by the London Borough of Harrow to spend 15 percent of its procurement budget with third party suppliers based locally.
Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning, Cllr Marilyn Ashton said:
“Our regeneration developments are about more than just housing - as a partnership, we are passionate about creating sustainable communities and enhancing the local economy. This first Meet the buyer event plays a key part in that ambition, and there will be more as our plans for Poets Corner, the former Civic Centre site, progress.
“Byron Quarter is an exciting well-designed development delivering much needed genuinely affordable family-sized homes including council-owned homes. Set against the backdrop of Byron Park and with links to the Belmont Trail, the low-rise development will reflect the character of the local neighbourhood.”
Leigh Johnson, Regional Development Director at Wates Residential, added:
“We’re proud to be working with the London Borough of Harrow to ensure the benefits of regeneration are felt across the local community and economy.
“By proactively opening up our supply chain locally, we’re creating meaningful opportunities for Harrow-based suppliers to play a part in this positive transformation. Our goal is to make sure local people and businesses are at the heart of this project – from the very start and throughout the years to come.”
Packages of work for the Byron Quarter site will include groundworks, hard and soft landscaping, brickwork, roofing, windows, carpentry, plastering and dry lining, curtain walling, security, design, tiling, painting and decorating, and cladding and lighting protection.
Further opportunities for local businesses include general site labour and additional site services such as security, catering, printing and more. Typical trades people that the partnership is looking for include labourers, gate operatives, vehicle bankman, security guards, plumbers, electricians’, bricklayers, carpenters, floor layers, dry liners, plasterers, tape and jointers - the list goes on.
Working with local suppliers will help the London Borough of Harrow to meet their commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Sourcing local suppliers is kinder on the environment by cutting the carbon emissions that are usually produced by travelling large distances.
Further events are scheduled in June to support businesses to join the supply chain, these include:
-
Friday 27 June and Monday 30 June: CITB Grants and Funding workshops to support CITB registered business to upskill and utilise their levy.
-
Thursday 5 June: Constructionline Going for Gold, the session will focus on how to achieve Gold verification and the benefits it offers.
