Free cycle training is available for people who live, work or study in Harrow. Courses are available for all abilities, from beginner to advanced.

The courses are run by qualified instructors from Cycle Confident.

Types of course

When you book your course, you can choose from the following options:

Basic - novice or new rider

Cycle in an off-road environment with a qualified instructor. You’ll learn the basics, build your skills and gain the confidence to be able to navigate around your local area.

Urban - improver/intermediate

Improve your cycling skills and confidence. You'll start in an off-road environment to refresh your cycling technique and develop new skills before moving on to practise on quiet roads. Your qualified instructor will support you throughout.

Advanced - for commuters and confident riders

Perfect your cycling techniques with a qualified trainer. Improve your performance when dealing with:

  • complex junctions
  • heavy traffic
  • cycling at night

Courses for family and friends

Gain confidence and learn skills to cycle as a family with a family cycle training session. Whether you and your family are novices to cycling or you all ride already but would like advice on specific routes, your instructor will tailor the session to meet your needs.

Bikeability for schools

Cycling is a fun way for children to keep fit while getting around their local area. Cycle training will teach them the skills they need to ride more safely.

The Bikeability scheme rewards children for taking part in cycle training. They can work their way through the following levels:

  • learn to control your bike in a safe, off-road environment
  • cycle safely on the road with other traffic on quieter roads
  • cycle on busier roads and manage complex junctions in London

Learn cycle skills online

Transport for London provide a free online cycle skills course.

The course has 4 video tutorials. You will learn how to:

  • get you and your bicycle prepared for the road
  • start cycling on the road safely and responsibly
  • brush up on your cycling skills
  • cycle in a group with children and other adults

Become a Local Cycle Instructor!

Cycle Confident are looking for local instructors to join their friendly team, delivering training to school children and adults in Harrow. You do not need any prior experience or qualifications - just a passion for cycling and a desire to teach others in Harrow!

Benefits of working for Cycle Confident include:

  • obtain a free National Standard for Cycle Training (NSI) accredited qualification
  • option of working freelance or fully contracted basis

Let's combat cycle theft crime together! 

BikeRegister is the UK’s national Police approved bicycle marking and registration scheme, aiming to reduce instances of cycle theft and reunite cyclists with their bikes after they have been stolen.

  • BikeRegister enables police officers to easily trace ownership of recovered stoen or lost bikes
  • BikeRegister protects potential buyers and sellers of second-hand bikes by providing an ownership logbook
  • Permanent marking and warning labels act as a high effective theft deterrent 
  • Every police officer has access to teh online database via internet or by phone 
  •

  • 50,140 bikes have been registered as stolen 
  • over 232,00 estimated bicycle theft incidents occured in 2021

Harrow Council will be running a series of Cycle Security Events to offer cyclists advice on how they can reduce the risk of their bike being stolen by using good quality locks and getting their bike registered and visibly security marked with BikeRegister.
