Heatwave: Red alert for Harrow

Hot weather

A red alert for extreme heat is in place for much of Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June this week

Temperatures are feeling like 40°C, and a Red Alert is in place — the highest level of warning.

This means there is a risk to everyone’s health, not just vulnerable groups.

Staying safe in the heat:

  • Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water regularly
  • Use sunscreen – protect your skin when outdoors
  • Avoid the sun between 11am–3pm – especially if you’re vulnerable
  • Check on others – friends, family and neighbours who may need support
  • Keep your home cool – close curtains and blinds during the day, open windows when it’s cooler
  • Plan ahead – keep essential supplies topped up and stay informed

Stay tuned to the weather forecast and plan ahead with supplies. The NHS have further information on coping in the heat

Service updates

  • Bin collections

Bin collections will start from 5am this week. Please leave your bins out the night before, or by 5am on your collection day.

This helps our crews complete rounds before the hottest part of the day.

  • Schools

Individual schools will provide updates directly to parents/carers

While schools remain open, schools will assess whether it is safe to stay open. We have provided heat advice to schools and they are keeping us updated on any closures. Please contact your child's school directly.

  • Cool hubs

Firm Foundation operates a Cool Hub at the Weldon Centre, Weldon Crescent.

Our outreach teams will undertake welfare visits, distribute bottled drinking water, provide heat-health advice, and offer practical support to those affected by extreme weather conditions.

Single individuals will be directed to Firm Foundation services, while families will be signposted to leisure centres, community centres, and other voluntary and community sector organisations that can provide access to cool spaces, welfare support, and additional assistance.
