Celebrating talent: National Apprenticeship Week

Apprenticeship week

It’s National Apprenticeship week, and we’re celebrating with a big recruitment drive in the borough.

Over the last 12 months, we have helped place more than 60 people into apprenticeships across schools, local businesses and within the Council. Many of these will move onto permanent positions or have upskilled in their role to progress in their career.

Santa Hirani, Adult Social Worker at the London Borough of Harrow recently completed her apprenticeship and graduated with a first class honours. Here she talks about her experience:

“I’ve been a social worker for almost 22 years. When the opportunity came to do an apprenticeship and complete an accredited qualification, I knew this was something I had to do for myself to further my career. Gaining a first in BA (Hons) in Social Work has helped me feel validated in my profession. It doesn’t matter what age you are, the experience for me was very rewarding and very fulfilling.”

If you’re interested in an apprenticeship or starting a new job, come along to our Xcite Jobs and Volunteering Fair on 15 February, 10am – 2pm at Harrow College. It’s a great opportunity to explore jobs and volunteering opportunities, meet employment advisors and training providers.

Cllr David Ashton, Portfolio Holder for Finance & Human Resources said:

“This job fair comes at a great time as we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week. We have successfully delivered apprenticeships as part of our flagship action to put our residents first and we are looking at what more we can do to help people in their careers.

“From job fairs, to funding for apprenticeships and work experience for our young residents, there will be a wide range of support on 15 February – so do come along to find what recruitment and upskilling opportunities are available.”

We want to support more people enter the world of work, and apprenticeships are proving a good option for both jobseekers and employers. We are continuing our commitment to support businesses by covering the cost of apprenticeship qualifications.
