Harrow Viewpoint to open temporarily

Old Redding Car Park (Viewpoint) to open temporarily over Christmas and New Year.

People will be able to enjoy the Viewpoint on Old Redding, which affords views across London, over the Christmas and New Year period as the car park is to temporarily reopen.

The car park was closed in September for safety reasons as it had become a haunt for anti-social behaviour and cars driving onto grassed areas had damaged the site.

Following tireless work with the Metropolitan Police, to make the area safe and free from misuse, a plan is in place to open the site from 19th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021.

As well as being a key viewpoint the site also links walkers to the Harrow Viewpoint and Bentley Priory circular walk.

The new design will incorporate measures to deter unwanted antisocial activities, by reducing the size of the parking area and using material to stop cars driving onto soft areas and other preventative measures.

Suitable earth has been moved from Headstone South Alleviation Scheme instead of it going to landfill and saving on costs in the process. It has been stockpiled and will be lowered in early spring, so that the original view is retained.

The current work to landscape and install an improved gravel car park surface with formal parking bays is temporarily suspended due to recent very wet weather and will recommence early next year when this improves.

The area is a working site so areas will be fenced off and visitors should to pay attention to this and all signage on the site.

Cllr Varsha Parmar, Environment Portfolio Holder, said:

“I am delighted we are able to reopen the car park for a limited time over the Christmas period. This will allow people to enjoy the views and walks around Old Redding.

“We have put in place robust measures to deter the antisocial behaviour and damage that led to the site’s closure and it is great to be able to make it publicly accessible again.”
