Alcohol or Entertainment licences

When do you need an Alcohol and Entertainment licence?

  • You need an Alcohol and Entertainment licence under the Licensing Act 2003 to sell alcohol, provide some forms of entertainment or sell hot food and drink between 11pm and 5am.

Businesses or organisations need a Premises licence to provide these activities. Members' clubs need a Club Premises certificate to provide the these activities.

Temporary Event Notice

You will need a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) if you are hosting a temporary event. This is unless you have a Premises licence or a Club Premises certificate.

You must consider how your activities affect:

  • crime and disorder
  • public safety
  • public nuisance
  • protecting children from harm

Licensed premises

Licensed premises selling alcohol needs a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS). The DPS must have a valid Personal licence.

Community premises

Community premises with a Premises licence may apply for a management committee to be responsible for alcohol sales instead of a DPS.

See the alcohol licensing: community premises guidance documents and application form.

Trading without a licence or breaching licence conditions risks a fine and up to six months in prison.
