Recycling performance

Our Harrow ambition plan is to:

  • maintain our position as one of the top recycling boroughs in London
  • develop a recycling plan to be the top performer in London achieving a target of 50% by 2020.

What is measured?

The amount of household waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting compared to the total amount of household waste collected in Harrow.

How are we performing?

Currently 41% of household waste is recycled or composted. In order to maintain recycling rates, we have plans to introduce recycling facilities on residential areas and develop mini recycling centres.

How do we compare with others?

There is a national picture of declining recycling rates. This is due to reasons such as less packaging on goods, more plastic being used instead of cans and bottles and also that people are reading news online instead of buying newspapers.
