Beware of potential fraud

A third party has been writing letters claiming to be from the London Borough of Waltham Forest regarding potential reductions to Council Tax as part of the Government’s response to Covid 19.

Both the letter and the website are fake but are of good quality and, as a result, are fairly convincing.

Please be aware that:

  • If the Council is offering a discount on the Council Tax it will generally write to the person whose name appears on the bill – not ‘The Occupier’.
  • The standard of written English used in the letter falls far below the standard the Council would use in a bulk letter.
  • The web address on the letter ends co.uk – almost invariably, online business conducted by a local authority, central government and most government agencies will end .gov.uk.  The use of the word gov anywhere in a web address other than immediately before .uk may well indicate an attempted fraud.

If you have received this letter and have acted on it you should report the incident to the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre.

We understand that many of you will be worried about the impact Coronavirus will have on your household - and many will already be feeling it's effects.

There will be concerns about when you’re able to return to work, and also about salaries being reduced to 80% or stopped altogether.

The Government has introduced a raft of measures to support households experiencing financial disruptions.

We’re also working on other measures such as help to buy food and help to reduce your Council tax bill for 2020/21 if you are in receipt of Council Tax Support.

In this section you will be able to view the measures currently put in place by both the Government and from a local authority level to help support you during the Coronavirus.
