Ordering certificates from the General Register Office

The General Register Office (GRO) holds a central copy of all registrations for England and Wales. They issue all of their certificates by post. To order a certificate contact the GRO.

A full set of the GRO index can be found at the locations below. You won’t be able to obtain a certificate at any of the locations, however some of the offices may provide access to the GRO online ordering service.

Microfiche copies from 1837

Microfiche copies of some of the births, marriages, deaths and overseas indexes from 1837 onwards. They are available at many local libraries and record offices. For a list of places where microfiche copies are held visit GRO.
