St John the Evangelist Church
Dating from 1632, the original church of St John the Evangelist is described as being "truly picturesque - one of the best ruins in London" by Pevsner. The Church was consecrated by Bishop Laud, is grade 2* listed and has historical and architectural importance.
An increase in population lead to the construction of the new Bath stone building. Unique monuments including effigies to Sir John Wolstenholme and the Fourth Earl of Aberdeen, (Prime Minister from 1852-55), were both moved to the new Bath Stone Church. W.S. Gilbert is also buried here.
The ruined 1632 church is open to the public on Saturdays between 2.30pm and 4.30pm from April-September with guides available on site. Guided tours of the Bath Stone Church can be made by prior appointment.
