Youth work celebrated in Harrow

Harrow celebrated National Youth Work Week with a celebration of the achievements of young people locally.

Seizing on the national awareness week, Harrow Council’s Youth Development Team took the opportunity to showcase the positive contribution youth work is making in the borough. And the raft of Council supported activities that took place this year.

A summer programme was open to all young people in the borough, but the majority of the team’s work focuses on young people who need extra support.

The event held at the Council offices on Friday evening (Friday 8th November) included performances and personal testimonies from young people.

Portfolio holder for Children and Schools, Cllr Janet Mote said:

"This was a celebration of all the great work being done in Harrow for our young people and by our young people.

"Listening to their stories, their journey and their achievements makes me very proud that we have such a nurturing programme in place in Harrow. Many of the young people who attended have gone through a range of programmes with our Youth Development Team and are now volunteering with us or have gone on to college or employment.

"The activities held over the summer were over subscribed and the feedback from young people and their carers was overwhelmingly positive.”

During the summer period (between 29th July 2013 and 30th August) over 450 young people attended the 189 events provided at locations across the borough.

Of these, 39% of those attending were known to the Children and Families Service with 41% of our looked after children aged 11 - 19 registering for activities.

The team provided a range of educational and training activities in fashion, design, hair braiding, Web design as well as self defence, cooking and health and beauty.

A theatre performance course, culminating in shows for friends and families was held and the Positive for Youth programme funded a further range of activities, including Harrow Community Radio Station training young people in presentation delivery and techniques.
