School Library Service
Supporting schools
Our school library service helps local schools set up their own libraries. We advise on set up, organisation, promotion and formulation of library policy.
School staff can visit our exhibition collection of 10,000 children's books.
Book purchasing scheme
We also help schools buy books for their school libraries and classroom collections. We visit schools to assess stock and draw up purchase plans. We can choose books for you or you can visit us and choose from our collection.
Books are ordered for you from library suppliers that offer excellent discounts. Paperbacks are jacketed or laminated and library classification is provided, if required.
Schools access this service as part of the School Library Service Service level agreement to schools.
Project boxes
Teachers can request tailor made project boxes on topics being studied in first and middle schools. The boxes contain up to 30 books based on the teaher's request and are delivered to and collected from the school.
Talks
Harrow Libraries offers talks to school assemblies, parents evenings and special events such as book fairs. We introduce the public library and enthuse about books and reading. We can promote events such as World Book Day, National Children's Book Week and 2008 National Year of Reading and have been successfully launching the summer Reading Challenge. We promote Bookstart, Booktime, Booked Up and other national schemes for families and we talk to school Family Learning Groups.
