New service lets you tell numerous organisations about a death in one go

When someone dies there are lots of things that need to be done, at a time when you probably least feel like doing them.

A new service launched by Harrow Council allows you to notify relevant authorities of the death of a loved one in one go.

Tell Us Once aims to make it quicker and easier for anyone who's suffered a bereavement to inform the many official bodies such as HM Revenue and Customs, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, Department for Work and Pensions  and the Passport Office, with just one online form.

Cllr Sue Anderson, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement & Accessibility, said:

“It’s not something we like to think about, but when a family member passes away, there is a lot of admin to do, including registering a death and arranging a funeral.

“On top of that, the last thing we want is a complicated process which is why we have launched our new Tell Us Once service. Any way we can help bereaved families and lessen their stress is a step in the right direction.”

The free, voluntary service offered by HM Government is very easy to use and available through the council. Upon registering the death, the registrar will give you a unique reference number to use the Tell Us Once service online or by phone 0800 085 7308. There is some information required about the person who died and you will need to have some items ready beforehand.
