Harrow offers emergency shelter to homeless as new ‘Beast from the East’ set to hit

With temperatures set to drop below zero tonight, Harrow is opening its severe weather shelters for the homeless and urging everyone to make sure no one is left out in the cold.

Weather forecasters have warned a new ‘Beast from the East’ is on the way which could put the country on track for the coldest winter on record.

The council’s severe weather protocol comes into force today, meaning anyone at risk of sleeping rough will be given emergency accommodation regardless of status.

If you are sleeping rough, or see someone who is, you can come to the Civic Centre in person during office hours (9am-5pm), call 020 8424 1093 or email housing.advice@harrow.gov.uk. After 5pm, call Access Harrow on 020 8863 5611.

The council is also pledging to join London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s In For Good scheme – meaning when a rough sleeper goes to an emergency shelter, they will be accommodated there until a support plan is put in place to help them off the streets for good.

The move is part of Harrow Council’s commitment to ending homelessness in the borough, with Mayor of Harrow Cllr Kareema Marikar naming FirmFoundation as one of her chosen charities this year.

In November, Cllr Marikar and Harrow Council leader Cllr Graham Henson joined a charity sleep-out overnight to raise awareness, and raised over £700 for FirmFoundation.
