Council’s longest serving member of staff to attend the Royal Garden Party

It may be all about the royal wedding this week but today the spotlight is on Harrow’s longest serving highway engineer who has been invited to the Queen’s Royal Garden Party.

Today, John Perring – one of the council’s longest serving members of staff will swap his high vis and hard hat with a suit and tie. After all he has the honour of attending the Royal Garden Party alongside The Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Margaret Davine to represent Harrow.

John who is a Harrow boy at heart – having lived here all his life has been working at the council for the last 46 years and has made an incredible contribution to the borough and the community. So it’s no wonder he received the special invitation for his services, and the positive impact he has made.

It all started in 1972 – the year ABBA was formed - where at the age of 18 John joined the council as a Trainee Highways Supervisor. Whilst working, he was also studying part-time at a local college for six years to gain qualifications and that’s where he learnt his trade in Highways Maintenance. As an engineer John’s role is to plan and oversee the Road Surfacing Programme in the borough, so if you’ve seen re-surfacing works on your road, the chances are John was behind the improvements.

The Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Margaret Davine said:

“What a beautiful day for The Royal Garden Party, the sun is shining and we’re all looking forward to what the day holds. I’m very much looking forward to meeting Her Majesty, The Queen but also the many other wonderful people like John that have gone above and beyond serving their local community.”

‘’I am extremely humbled and honoured to be invited to the Royal Garden Party. It means a lot to be recognised for my services to the borough. I have had an incredible time at Harrow Council and appreciate the support from the council over the years. It is the many people I meet and work with that make my job so enjoyable. My wife and I look forward to meeting the Queen and walking around the Royal Gardens.’’

Also representing Harrow at the Royal Garden Party is the Mayoress Marilyn Devine and Councillor Vina Mithani.
