Britain's first Hindu school approved at Harrow

Published 11th September 07

Plans for Britain’s first Hindu primary school have been approved by Harrow Council.

The charity the I Foundation received permission to build the school on part of the William Ellis Sports Ground, Camrose Avenue, Edgware from members of the council's Strategic Planning Committee last night (10 September).

Cllr Marilyn Ashton, portfolio holder for Planning, Development and Enterprise, said: "I am very proud at this historic moment in Harrow's history.

The first voluntary aided Hindu school in the United Kingdom will be in Harrow. "The Hindu community richly deserves to have the choice to send their children to a faith school of their own religion."

As part of the agreement, the future of the Belmont football club, which uses the sports ground, has been secured.

Half a million pounds is being contributed to improve football facilities at the sports ground.

The scheme, which was approved by all statutory consultees, will be considered in the new few weeks by the Greater London Authority, who have indicated that it will meet their strategic approval.

The I Foundation hope to open the school in September next year. Eventually it will cater for 236 pupils.
