Pensioner convicted of fraud

A pensioner convicted of cheating her way to more than £10,000 in benefits was handed a two-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, at Harrow Magistrates Court on 29 August.
Yvonne Lang, 71, from Kenton, pleaded guilty to four counts of making a false statement for the purpose of obtaining Housing and Council Tax Benefit.
She was also ordered to pay council costs of £500 within seven days. Investigations made by Harrow Council officers revealed Mrs Lang had undeclared savings of £70,000 at the time the fraud was uncovered, and yet failed to declare this on four separate occasions.
As a result of the investigation, officers discovered that Mrs Lang had been overpaid Housing Benefit amounting to £10,206.77 and Council Tax Benefit amounting to £1,974.90 covering a period between 2002 and 2006.
