Hundreds of young people helped into work and training since 2014

Harrow’s the place to be if you’re a young person looking for work and training and we’ve just welcomed our 500th apprentice! From a student to a young professional, Stevie Barrow is now on the road to success thanks to Harrow Council’s Xcite employment scheme.

With her ambition to work in the sports/fitness industry, Stevie joined Harrow Leisure Centre as a Fitness Instructor Apprentice – earning whilst learning. It’s only been six months into the apprenticeship and Stevie has been working up a sweat in her very own classes. Whilst been given the independence to work on her own, Stevie has also developed teamwork and communication skills. She doesn’t stop there, in September Stevie will begin a Business course to develop her career in personal training.

Xcite’s 500th apprentice, Stevie Barrow, said:

“A-levels were not the right choice for me. After gaining some experience in my local gym, I knew the fitness industry is where I wanted to be - I just needed a little help and guidance progressing my career. The Xcite team were so helpful and after speaking to them I realised an apprenticeship was what I was looking for. With an apprenticeship you get stuck in and can actually apply the new skills you’ve learned so it’s easier to understand.”

Leaving school and entering the world of work can be daunting and exciting at the same time. The Xcite team have helped hundreds of young people make this transition every year.

Cllr Keith Ferry, cabinet member for Business said:

“Apprenticeships really open up young people’s minds to the many opportunities that are available in Harrow. Getting 500 young people into work is a massive achievement but we won’t stop there. We will continue to support local businesses to recruit young people into apprenticeships and employment, as well as create apprenticeship opportunities within our own workforce.”

If you’re interested in starting a job or apprenticeship this Summer then the Xcite employment team can help you. There are a wide variety of sectors, from property and administration, to construction and digital, and you’ll be placed with Harrow’s top employers.
