Celebrating carers week

Published 7th June 11

Celebrating the enormous contribution carers make to their local community, Harrow Council is staging a host of events to mark National Carers Week, 13th - 19th June.

Designed for the first time by carers for carers, the week of activity will also promote the support on offer to those who often do an unsung job looking after loved ones or relatives.

Staff will man an information stand at Harrow Council's Civic Centre every day from Monday 13th June to Friday 17th with details of the support available locally. Health and wellbeing events, a mental health workshop and carers quiz and networking afternoon tea is also planned.

St George's Shopping Centre in Harrow Town Centre hosts a carers roadshow from 11am to 1pm on Saturday 18th June.

Edgware resident, Caroline Mascarenhas is one of the local carers who spearheaded this years event. She said:

"So many carers are doing what I was doing; struggling alone, feeling invisible and isolated. I am now 100 per cent passionate about making a difference for them and helping to promote carers week. Although I work as a life coach, I volunteered to work with the council to plan and promote the national event.

"I know that I ignored my own health and well being when I was caring for my parents so I want to let others know that they are not alone. Find out how to stay fit and healthy and most importantly know that support is available."

Cllr Margaret Davine, Portfolio Holder for Adults Social Care, Health and Wellbeing, said:

"Carers week is a great opportunity to thank all of the many carers in our community. The work they do is invaluable, supporting some of our most vulnerable residents. I hope the awareness week gives carers the opportunity to find out more about the support available from the Council and its partners. We have a strong sense of community spirit in Harrow and this is due in no small part to the enormous contribution carers make to our borough."

Carers events planned in the borough next week include:

Information stand at Harrow Civic Centre everyday from 10am to 12noon.

Afternoon tea and carers quiz at St Peter's Church, West Harrow from 1-3pm on Friday 17th June.

Carers roadshow at St George's Shopping Centre will also take place from 11am to 1pm on Saturday 18th June.
