Compost giveaway to mark awareness week
Published 3rd May 11
Green fingered residents can get their hands on some free compost as Harrow Council marks National Compost Awareness Week.
The Council has 20 tonnes of compost to give away from West London Composting, which processes composting from homes in Harrow and neighbouring boroughs.
Residents can bring their own bag and help themselves on a first come first served basis from 9am on Wednesday 4th May in the car park at Roxeth Recreation Ground and Thursday 5th May at the Carlton Avenue car park at Kenton Recreation Ground. There will be 10 tonnes, supplied by West London Composting, available at each event.
Every year households in the UK throw around four million tonnes of waste that could have been composted. That does not just cover garden waste - about a third of our rubbish can be composted, including tea bags, coffee grounds and egg shells.
Composting helps to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste being sent to landfill and produces a free fertilizer that can help vegetables, shrubs and flowers flourish.
Portfolio Holder for Environment and Community Safety at Harrow Council, Cllr Phillip O'Dell, said:
"It takes very little effort but diverts waste from landfill sites, which saves us all money and makes Harrow a greener place to live.
"This compost comes from residents' organic waste bins. It is great for plants so I hope the gardeners who take some away will see the benefit and start composting at home. "
