Harrow’s mayor makes a special delivery
Published 23rd March 11
Avid customers of Harrow 's housebound library service got a special delivery this week, when they opened their doors to the borough's first citizen.
Complete with mayoral chain, Cllr Asad Omar spent a number of hours on Monday morning delivering books with the council team.
Harrow's housebound Library Service visits over 500 Harrow residents who are no longer able to go to the library due to illness or age. The service visits every customer once a month, delivering books - many in large print or in other languages - audio books on cassette or CD, music, DVD's, videos and even jigsaws.
Housebound library customers have borrowed nearly 60,000 items this year alone. The service is run with the assistance of a team of volunteer drivers. Harrow Council is working hard despite government cuts to protect all of the borough's 11 library branches and the much valued housebound service.
Mayor of Harrow , Cllr Asad Omar said:
"The readers really value this service and a number of people described it as a lifeline. It is an important link with the local community that many would otherwise be cut off from. I was delighted to have helped out with the team and to see first hand the difference it makes to the lives of residents in Harrow . It is also refreshing to see how in demand our library service is and how many new and established readers we have out there."
