A Harrow high School is celebrating after being rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for the second time in a row.
Shaftesbury High School impressed inspectors with the wide range of opportunities and qualifications on offer to pupils, the high quality of care and support the pupils receive and the positive attitude of everyone at the school.
The special school, in Headstone Lane , caters for pupils aged 11-19 with a wide range of needs, from moderate to severe learning difficulties. It was also rated 'outstanding' following its last inspection, in May 2008.
Key areas highlighted in the glowing report include:
- Pupils are well behaved
- A strong emphasis on communication and ICT, the benefits of which can be seen across the curriculum
- Teachers working hard to boost pupils' self esteem and ensure they gain the personal, social and learning skills to prepare them for the future
- Staff treat each pupil as an individual and have high expectations of them
- Students of all ages work and play together in a harmonious atmosphere
- The school makes a strong contribution to the local community through their work with others, particularly the elderly, in taking part in sports and creative arts events, and contributing to the Youth Parliament.
- Excellent sixth form provision
The report goes on to say: "At the heart of the school's vision is the belief that all students, whatever their background or ability, will be successful. Teaching and learning are of the highest quality and, as a result, students' achievements are outstanding.
"Safeguarding procedures are outstanding and students indicate that they feel very safe and secure. Relationships are extremely positive and staff listen carefully to students' views.
"Students, regardless of their background and ability, enjoy learning and achieve extremely well. By the end of year 11, all gain qualifications covering a wide range of academic and vocational subjects."
Headteacher Paul Williams said: "We are delighted that Ofsted has again recognised Shaftesbury as being outstanding in all that it does. The way staff work together, and the support we receive from parents, carers and governors enables these ongoing achievements.
"Our pupils deserve the best and we aim to continue to give them the best, at all times."
Portfolio holder for schools and colleges at Harrow Council, Cllr Brian Gate, said: "This is an excellent achievement; everyone at Shaftesbury High School has continued to work very hard since its last outstanding report. The staff, pupils, parents and governors should all be very proud and I'd like to congratulate them on a brilliant report."
