International Day of Disabled

Published 18th November 10

International day of Disabled - Friday 3rd December

HARROW residents are invited to find out about more benefits, services and support for disabled people, at a special event at the Council's Civic Centre to mark International Day of the Disabled.

Organisations already lined up to promote their services at the open day include; Harrow Mencap, MIND, Guide Dogs for the Blind, DisabledGo and Age Concern Harrow. A number of service areas across the Council will also be on hand to raise awareness of their services.

Harrow Council is hosting the awareness day on Friday 3rd December to link in with the thousands of other events taking place across the country with the international theme of travel, transport and tourism. Just over 10% of Harrow residents describe themselves as having a limiting long term illness or disability. The event will showcase the many and varied supports available, with guide dogs setting up home in the Council HQ for the day.

Along with its community partner, Harrow Association of Disabled People (HAD) the Council intends to mark the awareness day with a community information and advice event.

Portfolio Holder for Performance, Customer Services and Corporate Services, Cllr. Graham Henson said:

"International Day of Disabled People is the perfect opportunity to promote an awareness of disability issues within the borough while also highlighting the services available. As a Council we are committed to protecting services to our most vulnerable residents and highlighting the very many services and supports available. We are also mindful of the large part the many voluntary groups and organisations play in supporting members of our community."

The free event at Harrow Council's Civic Centre will take place on Friday 3rd December from 10am to 3pm in the Member's Lounge.

Any organisations that would like to be involved in this event and would like to reserve a stall to promote their services, should contact equalities@harrow.gov.uk to reserve a space. Due to limited capacity, stalls will be reserved on a first come first serve basis.

If you have any queries regarding the event, please contact Mohammed Ilyas, Policy Officer - Equalities and Diversity equalities@harrow.gov.uk.
