Mobility scooter challenge for Harrow
Published 14th September 10
The Mayor of Harrow will lead a mobility scooter rally to mark International Day for Older People next month.
The borough's first citizen, Cllr Asad Omar, will join residents as they take to the paths on mobility scooters for the novel awareness and fundraising event.
The event will promote what help is available locally to help people with mobility problems to get around the borough and keep their independence. It is organised by Age Concern, Harrow and supported by the Council, Mobility World Harrow and Sainsbury's South Harrow .
The procession of mobility scooters will travel the five miles from Station Road, Harrow to South Harrow and back to the town centre, taking in three 'Pit-stops' along the way.
All of the funds raised through sponsorship of the rally will go towards the work carried out by Age Concern Harrow.
Mayor of Harrow , Asad Omar said:
"Mobility scooters are essential for people who struggle to get around. They help preserve their independence and continue to live life to the full.
"This fun event is all about raising awareness of the benefits they bring and we want to encourage more people with mobility problems to find out more.
" It is also great opportunity for residents to celebrate older people in our community while also highlighting mobility issues and challenges people of all ages face."
Avani Modasia, Chief Executive at Age Concern Harrow also hopes the event will dispel the stereotype that mobility scooters are just for older people.
"We hope the event will change peoples' perception of mobility scooters in a fun and positive way. We want to underline the impressive distances that many modern mobility scooters are capable of and that the stigma attached to them is now out of date."
Residents have until next Friday 24th September to register for the event, which will take place on Friday 1st October. Places are still available for anyone who would like to take part, for more information and a sponsorship pack, contact Age Concern Harrow on 020 8861 7997.
