New chapter for Gayton Library as Sunday opening is launched

Published 2nd September 10

Harrow residents can find their favourite reads, surf the net, rent a DVD, borrow some music or even get job hunting tips seven days a week, when Gayton Library reopens its doors on Sundays.

The official opening takes place this Sunday, 5th September, when Harrow Council leader Councillor Bill Stephenson will be joined by ward councillors and the Library Lion to cut a ribbon at 1pm.

The new opening hours mean the town centre library will be open for 62 hours a week, making it even easier for all residents to access its services.

The popular library, in St John's Road , has not opened on Sundays since 2007.

The new opening hours will be 1-5pm, and a wide range of services will be available, including free internet access , DVD rental, quiet study areas and guidance on how to search for jobs online and tips on writing a CV.

Portfolio holder for community and cultural service, Councillor Reka Shah, said: "Residents tell us how important their local libraries are to them, but opening hours aren't always convenient for people who work fulltime.

"Gayton Library already opens until 8pm on Monday-Thursday, until 5.30 on Fridays and 5.00 on Saturdays but the Sunday opening will mean even more residents can take advantage of the brilliant services right in the middle of Harrow town centre.

"There's a lot more to Harrow's libraries than books - visitors can browse the internet, learn how to use computers, borrow films and our younger residents can listen to stories. If you're not a member, this is an ideal time to join up."

Harrow Council's cabinet approved the Sunday opening at its first meeting in June.
