Council turns to solar power

Harrow is aiming to have the most solar powered homes in London within the next two years.
Local residents responded enthusiastically to an initiative last year when the council and Scottish and Southern offered to install solar thermal heating in local homes for just £500.
The council received more than 400 enquiries and, as a result, is currently installing panels in 20 homes with a further 20 planned later this year.
Mrs Shirley Decosimo of Kenton is one of the first people to benefit from the scheme.
Shirley, 73, said: "My electric bills just kept going up so when I saw the advert I thought go for it. The contractors Dawsetway made the installation a smooth process and I have nothing but praise for the whole scheme'.
Cllr Susan Hall, portfolio holder for environment, added: "The response was overwhelming but demand currently outstrips supply and we are seeking further funding to extend the scheme. A large number of people have taken an interest and will do all we can to secure further external funding."
Up to 40% of carbon emissions in London come from housing. Solar power provides up to 70% of energy in a home during the summer months and 50% in the winter. In addition, each solar installation saves one ton of CO2 per year per household.
