Council to inject additional funding into pothole repairs

Published 17th June 10

Harrow Council’s Cabinet is set to approve an additional £100,000 of funding for pothole repairs as work continues to bring the borough’s roads back up to scratch after extreme winter weather.

Councillors will be asked to confirm the extra funding at next Wednesday's (23rd June) meeting using money from an underspend in the council budget last year.

The council has currently filled nearly 3,000 out of the total number of 7,500 potholes initially identified earlier this year. It has an annual budget of £1m for highway repairs and has spent an added £250,000 of council funds and £113,000 from a national government pot to fix the unprecedented number of potholes caused by snow and ice in January.

To date the extra funds have been used to repair the deepest and most dangerous potholes but more work is needed on less serious defects.

Cllr Phillip O'Dell, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Community Reassurance on Harrow Council, said:

"We know the state of our carriageways is a top priority for residents and that is why we propose injecting more funding into bringing them back up to standard.

"The Council has worked continuously to repair and restore roads scarred by the extremely bad weather over the winter, giving priority to the busiest routes.

"This extra money would allow our highways officers to work on those more minor potholes and scars that if not repaired will worsen over time."
