Gritters work round the clock to keep Harrow moving

Published 22nd December 09

Harrow council has been working round the clock to keep Harrow moving as the snow and icy conditions continue.

Harrow Council has deployed its six lorries across the north London borough almost continuously for the past few days, depositing 220 tonnes of salt in the last 24 hours alone.

Harrow Council has deposited 440 tonnes of salt since the current cold snap began on Wednesday last week.

The Council now has reserves of just over 2,500 tonnes of salt at its depot. It has a further 1,000 tonnes on order should the current cold weather continue.

Cllr Susan Hall, Harrow Council's deputy leader, said: "We have managed to keep 129km of roads in Harrow clean and safe and that is all down to forward planning."

Some of the council's services have been affected due to icy conditions in parts of the borough.

Buses to transport people with special needs have been cancelled today due to ice on some of the side roads and pavements.

All care homes and day care centres have been told about the service cancellation.  Some residents who aren't able to get to the day care centres today have been offered Meals on Wheals service for the day, which has a full team delivering food to residents as normal.

The primary gritting routes are shown via our winter maintenance section.
