Swine flu update

Published 19th October 09

Harrow Council would like to reassure residents that we have plans in place to deal with rising cases of swine flu and are working with Harrow Primary Care Trust in keeping everyone up-to-date.

As the national media reports rising cases of the virus, which is now a phase six pandemic, the council is adhering to Department of Health advice as the situation evolves.

The NHS has shifted its focus from containment to treatment while the Health Protection Agency will no longer provide daily updates on confirmed cases because of this transition.

While it is impossible to determine exactly how many people have contracted swine flu, it is important to note that most people recover within a few days without needing to see their GP or attending hospital.

Those who have been seriously affected have also had underlying health problems. If you have flu-like symptoms, it is important that you talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, very young, over 65 or have long-term conditions, such as asthma or diabetes.

The National Pandemic Flu Service will launch at the end of this week. It comprises a dedicated website and call centres which will be able to quickly tell you if you have swine flu.

If you do, you will be given an authorisation number that a 'flu friend' - a friend or relative who does not have swine flu - can use to pick up your antivirals from one of your local collection points.

General hygiene can help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including swine flu.

This includes:

Covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully.

Maintaining good basic hygiene.

Cleaning hard surfaces (such as door handles) frequently.

Remember: CATCH IT. BIN IT. KILL IT.

Anyone concerned about swine flu symptoms in children, or adults, should telephone their GP or NHS Direct on: 0845 46 47.
