Who is Paediatric Nutrition and Dietetic Service for?

The Dietetic Service is provided to children in Harrow, in their GP practice or within the outpatient setting, at Central Middlesex and Northwick Park Hospital. This is determined by the age of the child and the level of specialised dietetic care required, so that they will be seen by an appropriate Dietitian. Additional support is given to acutely ill children, in the hospital setting.

What does the service provide?

The Practice-based Dietitian will see children who are registered with a Harrow GP and are over the age of 3 years, for general dietetic care.

Issues addressed include poor eating habits, constipation and obesity.

The Paediatric Dietitian will assess and treat children who have difficulties in the following areas:

  • Behavioural feeding problems
  • Faltering growth
  • Gut problems
  • Allergies
  • Diabetes
  • Receiving tube feeds

Children requiring tube feeds receive ongoing care in clinics at Harrow special schools Woodlands and Kingsley High. Children may be seen in their family home for the care of tube feeding, where the clinic setting is not appropriate.

We work closely with families, health visitors and other healthcare professionals to support the care of children.

How do I access the service?

The Nutrition and Dietetic service operates a referral system, so that the child can be referred to the most appropriate Dietitian. We accept written referrals from the GP or Health visitor, Community Nurses, Community Paediatricians and hospital Paediatricians with parental consent.

All referrals will be offered an appointment to see the Dietitian, at one of the sites, depending upon the specialist care required. This could be at their GP practice, Northwick Park or Central Middlesex Hospital outpatients.
