Who is the Child Health Medical Team for?
Community Paediatricians work with children and young people aged 0-18 years (or up to 19 years if young person attends a special school) who have:
- Developmental difficulties (both pre-school and school age).
- Physical disability, including cerebral palsy and the ongoing effects of brain injury.
- Communication disorders, including autism spectrum difficulties.
- Some behavioural difficulties, including ADHD and Tourette syndrome.
- Learning difficulties with associated complex medical problems such as epilepsy.
- Down’s syndrome and other genetic disorders which cause disability.
The child or young person must have a Harrow GP and/or should be a Harrow resident.
The team also provide services to children and young people living in special circumstances e.g. children looked after by the local authority.
What does the service provide?
The Children’s community child health team is made up of senior consultant paediatricians who provide diagnosis, treatment, on-going support and monitoring to children and young people in their care. This involves working in partnership with other professionals including therapists, orthotists, dieticians and other members of the Child Development Team as well as education, social services and the ADD LINK HERE WHEN PAGE IS CREATEDChild And Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). The team are based at Northwick Park Hospital and work across a variety of community settings within Harrow and have excellent links to local schools and other services in the area.
How do I access the service?
Referrals can be made by a GP, health visitor, school nurse, social worker in certain circumstances, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, child and adolescent mental health clinic and consultants from other specialties.
Referrals are discussed within a multi-disciplinary professionals team meeting to determine the most appropriate services to meet your child’s needs. To support a child’s diagnosis, further information from a child’s pre-school, nursery or school may be required.
This service is available Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm.
