Accessible Homes SPD
Harrow's updated Accessible Homes SPD was adopted by the Council on the 18 March 2010. The SPD will assist all those involved in the design and planning of new homes to create adaptable, accessible accommodation for everyone in the community by setting out the priciples and requirements for Lifetime Homes and Wheelchair accessible homes.
Lifetime Homes are those constructed to a standard that makes them more accessible to everyone and which enables future occupiers to make small adaptations to meet their changing needs. Further information maybe obtained by visiting the Lifetime Homes website.
Wheelchair accessible homes are those which are constructed to a higher specification of accessibility so that they are suitable for immediate or future occupation by a wheelchair user (with or without adapatation to meet a user's specific needs). Further information maybe obtained from the Mayor of London's Best Practice Guidance (2007).
The SPD applies to any proposal in Harrow that creates new homes: new-build development, any change of use to dwellings and conversions of houses to flats. For non-residential development proposals the Access for All SPD (2006) should be used.
