Harrow Council

Area regeneration

Wealdstone

This part of the borough has been the focus of much of the council's regeneration activity in recent years.

A flagship community facility was constructed in Wealdstone High Street that incorporates a library, youth and community centre, and healthy living centre (a café training facility for people with learning disabilities).

The railway station also went througha major refurbishment with input from the local community through Wealdstone Active Community.

These facilities have boosted the vitality and viability of the district centre.

Additional new housing in Headstone Drive, Railway Approach and Grant Road has provided additional homes in or close to the district centre.

Also,  the council has identified possible development opportunities around Harrow Leisure Centre, 500m to the east of the shopping area.

In an effort to regenerate the area and meet the concerns of local traders, the council has successfully lobbied Transport for London (TfL) for general traffic to be reintroduced to the bus-only section of the high street between Palmerston Road and Gordon Road.

What is happening currently

Harrow Council and enterprisemouchel are currently reviewing the proposals for the re-opening of Wealdstone High Street to traffic.

The aim is to restore vibrancy to Wealdstone Town Centre and boost the local economy by improving the visibility of high street businesses to passing trade and by providing short-term, easy to find parking for visitors.

In addition, using funding made available by TfL, a town centre manager has been employed to promote regeneration and identify opportunities to benefit Wealdstone and its businesses.
