How is all the recyclable waste managed?
Glass, paper, metal, plastic
We send all the recyclable material to an MRF (pronounced "mirf"). Here the materials are separated mechanically, magnetically and to some extent by hand.
- Glass is separated mechanically and reused as an aggregate, rather than for reuse as jars and bottles
- Paper is run through a drum which extracts it and is sent to a paper mill
- Steel cans are separated by magnets
- Aluminium cans go through a process called 'eddy current separation'
- Plastic bottles and containers are usually removed by hand
