Statutory consultations on the primary school expansion programme

Statutory consultations from Monday 16 January to Monday 27 February 2012

A borough-wide consultation about the proposed Primary School Expansion Programme was held from 10 October to 11 November 2011.  Having considered the outcomes of the consultation and the initial school site feasibility studies for building works to expand schools, Harrow Cabinet at its meeting on 15 December 2011 approved moving a final list of schools to the statutory processes for permanent expansion.

Notes

  • It is anticipated that additional schools will be proposed for permanent expansion in later phase(s).
  • The demand for additional places is such that all community primary schools in Harrow will be part of the strategic approach to meet the increased demand for school places, and those schools not proposed for permanent expansion will be identified in a programme for temporary Reception classes (often referred to as bulge classes) during the next five years.
  • The opening of bulge classes will depend on actual demand around the borough, and the use of bulge classes will be monitored and reviewed annually.
  • Any increase in provision by voluntary aided schools or through new free schools will be factored into planning.
In common with many local authorities, Harrow needs to create more primary school places to meet the growing demand for places.  Harrow 's schools are successful and popular with parents and pupils.  Our challenge is to find ways to increase the number of places while ensuring that educational standards are maintained.
