School reorganisation to change the ages of transfer
Introduction
From September 2010 the ages of transfer will change and Harrow's schools will become infant, junior, primary and secondary schools aligned with the National Curriculum Key Stages.
Changing the ages of transfer is a radical move, but one that parents, teachers and school governors have been requesting for many years. It will bring Harrow's school structure in line with the National Curriculum Key Stages and with neighbouring authorities. It is expected that the proposals will provide scope to improve standards and pupil achievement even further, and will help to place schools at the centre of their communities.
Changing the ages of transfer means that children will move from infant school to a junior school at the end of Year 2 (the year a child becomes 7 years of age) instead of in Year 3. They will then change from junior or primary school to their secondary school at the end of Year 6 (the year a child becomes 11 years of age) instead of at the end of Year 7 (or age 12).
It is expected the reorganisation of schools will provide opportunities for school sites to be used to further develop extended school activities and increase access for the local community.
