School reorganisation to change the ages of transfer

From September 2010 the ages of transfer changed and Harrow's schools  became infant, junior, primary and secondary schools.

The changes to the ages of transfer mean that children move between school phases as follows:

• from infant school to a junior school at the end of Year 2 (the year a child becomes 7 years of age) instead of at the end of  Year 3.
• from junior or primary school to their secondary school at the end of Year 6 (the year a child becomes 11 years of age) instead of at the end of Year 7 (or age 12).

Changing the ages of transfer was a radical move, but one that parents, teachers and school governors had been requesting for many years.  It  brings Harrow 's school structure in line with the National Curriculum Key Stages and with neighbouring authorities.  It is expected that the change will provide scope to improve standards and pupil achievement even further, and will help to place schools at the centre of their communities by providing opportunities for school sites to be used to further develop extended school activities and increase access for the local community.
