Respite & shared care for children

About respite & shared care for children

Family life can be very different when a child has a disability - whether it's physical, sensory or a learning disability. The child may need extra attention and help, and it's natural for family members to want a regular break from giving such intense care.

The Family Placement unit is always looking for individuals and families who can look after a child with a physical or learning disability for short periods to give their main carers a break. This may be for an evening, a weekend, a holiday, or even just for a couple of hours, but your time and understanding could make all the difference to the child and their family.

Life for a child with a disability is very different. Often they may not have the same opportunities as other children for going out and making friends, which can be an isolating experience. This is where the Family Link carer can be invaluable, liasing with the child and giving them the chance to experience new activities and opportunities.

You could make the following difference both parent and child:

  • Children have outings to look forward to, just like their brothers and sisters
  • The parents benefit from having time to relax, and maybe spend more time with their other children
  • Just knowing they have someone to call on can be a great relief
  • It gives them the freedom to do the things that most people take for granted - going shopping or taking their children on a day trip, for instance

If you think you would enjoy caring for a disabled child or young person, and want to help a family in Harrow, we can give you the training and support you would need to become a Family Link carer.

The link entitled 'Related FAQs' (found at the bottom of the page) will take you to a list of frequently asked questions that will answer many of your queries.
